Welcome to the DC Children's Literature Book Club

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: I live far away/ can’t come on Sundays/ have other events during meetings. Should I stay on the listserv?

Answer: Absolutely. Come whenever you can, but it’s okay if you can’t make it every month. It's also okay if you can only make it to a meeting once a year. If you stay on the listserv, you can get suggestions and genre lists, and discuss books from meetings you weren’t able to attend. Also, it’s a good place for hearing about local upcoming children’s literature events.

If you end up leaving the listserv, just know that you're welcome back anytime.

Question: Can I vote in polls or join in the online discussion even if I can’t make the meetings?

Answer: Of course. We’d love to hear what you have to say. And who knows? Maybe your schedule will change or you’ll be in town for a business trip and you’ll be able to come to a meeting after all.

Question: Can I come to a meeting if I haven’t read or finished the book?

Answer: Definitely. Just be aware that we'll be discussing plot details and the ending. Sometimes, it can be difficult to have time to read the book, but hearing the discussion about it may pique your interest in it enough to read it later.

Question: Do I just show up at a meeting or should I tell someone I'm coming?

Answer: You can just show up, but it's really helpful to know that you're coming,
so we know to wait for you before starting the discussion.  Post a quick note to the listserv, RSVP to the Facebook group, or send an e-mail to Susan.

Question: I know the group is for adults, but can I bring a child with me to the book club?

Answer: Sure, if they’re willing to sit through the discussion. And they’re especially welcome if we’re talking about a book they have opinions about that they want to share. One of our members brought her six year old daughter to our discussion of The Talented Clementine by Sara Pennypacker. Her daughter loved the fact that we were talking about one of her favorite books.

Question: I have a friend who’d like to come. Can I invite them?

Answer: Definitely. Just let Susan know their name and e-mail address if they’re interested in coming regularly, so I can add them to the listserv. Or you can have them go to directly to the Yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DC_Kidlit) and select "Join." Just tell your friend to put your name in the membership request, and I'll add them to the group.
